New YorkWhen deciding to transfer to Marist, Alyssa Terralavoro ’26 was initially hesitant due to her proximity to home. But, from her first campus visit, Alyssa recalled having a sense of belonging that everywhere else lacked; a sense that Marist would quickly become her new home away from home and a place she would never want to leave.
As a double major in Psychology and Crime and Justice Studies and a minor in Social Work, Alyssa quickly extended her passions and career aspirations by becoming involved in several extracurricular activities. She not only joined the dance team but also the Admissions Student Leadership Board, where she was able to develop her professional skills and rapport. It's her experience working in the Admissions Office that she often credits many of her connections made in the fields of criminal justice and psychology.
When asked about why she wants to pursue a career in the mental health field, Alyssa looks back fondly on one class in particular: Abnormal Psychology with Professor Linda Breithaupt. "This class really narrowed down my passions, and it was clear I wanted to advocate for those who have no one to do it for them."
Alyssa's advice to those considering transferring to Marist is to "keep an open mind. There will be times when the workload gets tough. However, it is so worth it. In those times, connections are still being made, knowledge absorption is at a peak, and lifelong skills are being learned and used. It is so important for students to get out there, join clubs that interest them, push themselves to new limits, and get to explore who they truly are."
Alyssa asserts that there is truly nowhere else she would rather have her college experience. "Marist happily took me into their community, and I am so content with my decision to transfer. I have grown tremendously as a person throughout my time here thus far. I have met my best friends who have turned into family and been provided with ample opportunities to succeed in my career."
